Hyperparathyroidism Natural Remedies
In the United States alone, about 100,000 people will develop hyperparathyroidism every year. At a certain age, or with a certain history, an individual may run the risk of developing hyperparathyroidism. However, this condition can be prevented by the application of hyperparathyroidism natural remedies.
Even if you are already suffering from the condition, there are still some steps you can take to get rid of hyperparathyroidism in your body.

What is Hyperparathyroidism?
Hyperparathyroidism, generally known as overactive parathyroid, is an excess of hormone that is produced by four small glands in the neck. These glands are called parathyroid glands. An overactive parathyroid can be a result of an enlarged gland, or it is caused by another disease.
There are two different types of hyperparathyroidism. The first is known as the primary hyperparathyroidism, which is an enlargement of one or more of the parathyroid glands that cause overproduction of the hormone. This results in high calcium levels in the blood, which can cause in a variety of health problems. Primary hyperparathyroidism often requires surgery or hyperparathyroidism natural remedies
Secondary hyperparathyroidism often occurs due to another disease in the body that causes low calcium levels in the body. However, as time goes on, if treatment is done on time, secondary hyperparathyroidism may result in increased parathyroid hormone levels, which is, of course, the primary hyperparathyroidism.
Symptoms of Hyperparathyroidism
Most times, hyperparathyroidism is diagnosed before the signs and symptoms of the condition manifest themselves. And when the symptoms finally occur, they are as a result of the dysfunction or damage in other organs or tissues due to high calcium in the urine and blood, or not enough calcium in the bones.
In some cases, symptoms of hyperparathyroidism may be so mild that they may not seem related to the condition. In other cases, the symptoms may be severe. The range of signs and symptoms may include the following:
- Nausea, loss of appetite, or vomiting
- Kidney stones
- Complaints of frequent illness with no apparent cause
- Excessive urination
- Pains in the joints and bones
- Abdominal pain
- Forgetfulness or depression
- Weakness, or getting tired easily
- Tingling of the hands and feet
- Stiff achy muscles
- Fatigue, feeling ‘run down’
- Elevated risk of cardiovascular disease
- Elevated risk for complications in babies that are conceived to mothers who have untreated hyperparathyroidism
These symptoms can be battled with adequate hyperparathyroidism natural remedies.
Risk Factors Associated with Hyperparathyroidism
Unfortunately, some factors, either natural or unnatural, could put one at risk of having hyperparathyroidism. These factors may include:
- Being a woman. This condition affects more women than men. Most victims of hyperparathyroidism are post-menopausal women. About one in every 500 women over the age of sixty has been estimated to develop hyperparathyroidism each year in the U.S.
- Being an elderly person. People that are older are more susceptible to diseases, either men or women. Therefore, elderly people run the risk of developing hyperparathyroidism and may require hyperparathyroidism natural remedies.
- Having exposed one’s neck to radiation therapy during the treatment for cancer. Since the origin of hyperparathyroidism starts from the neck; those who have exposed their necks to radiation might be susceptible to the condition.
- A genetic inheritance or family history of the condition. It does not matter whether you take good precautions or not. Those whose families have a history of having the condition might also develop hyperparathyroidism.
- Also, having a history of multiple endocrine neoplasias (which is a rare hereditary disorder) may put one at risk of developing the condition.
- If you have a history of kidney failure or kidney disease, then you may run the risk of having hyperparathyroidism. One of the functions of your kidney is to convert vitamin D into a form your body can use. This vitamin D is needed to regulate calcium levels. There may be a problem if the kidney is too weak to do all these. One of the most prevalent causes of secondary hyperparathyroidism has been associated with chronic kidney failure.
- Severe vitamin D deficiency.
- Severe calcium deficiency.
- Taking some drugs may also put one at risk. Such drugs as lithium, which is often used to treat bipolar disorder, may put one at great risk of hyperparathyroidism.
Conventional Treatment of Hyperparathyroidism
This condition is often detected by blood tests. These tests can indicate that you have elevated calcium in your blood. Diagnosis can be made even before someone has a noticeable symptom. Other tests that can be used to determine the presence of hyperparathyroidism in the body include:
- Urine test: to find out the level of calcium that is passed from the urine
- Ultrasound: a test carried out to determine tissue around the parathyroid glands
- Bone mineral density test (DXA): this is done to measure the amount of bone mineral and calcium in the body
- Imaging test for kidney: to check for abnormalities in the kidney
- Sestamibi scan: to help determine which parathyroid glands are hyperactive
Hyperparathyroidism can be treated in the following ways besides hyperparathyroidism natural remedies:
- Surgery to remove the affected parathyroid gland. This surgery is known as parathyroidectomy, which is the most common treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism. The aim of this surgery is to take out any abnormal tissue in the parathyroid gland which is affecting hormone output. Parathyroidectomy is usually quite effective; it has been known to cure the condition in about 90 to 95 percent of cases.
- Calcimimetic medications such as cinacalcet (Sensipur) are also very effective. This particular medication tricks the parathyroid glands into releasing less parathyroid hormone by mimicking the effect of calcium.
- Hormone replacement therapy. This can help the bones to retain calcium.
- Bisphosphonate medications. These help in stopping bones from losing calcium, and reducing the risk of fracture.
Natural Remedies for Hyperparathyroidism
It is generally known that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, overactive parathyroid can be avoided by observing the following rules. These hyperparathyroidism natural remedies help in preventing complications:
1. Eat an Hyperparathyroidism Diet
When you have hyperparathyroidism, what food are you supposed to eat? To prevent the deficiency in calcium, which can worsen the symptoms and complications of hyperparathyroidism, it is essential that you eat food that is high in calcium. The daily recommended amount of calcium intake for an adult between the ages of 19 and 50, and men between the ages of 51 and 70, is 1000mg a day. It increases to 1,200mg a day for women aged 51 and above, and men aged 71 and above.
The best sources of calcium include:
- Dairy products (yoghurt, goat’s milk, raw milk, aged cheese)
- Leafy greens
- Veggies, such as broccoli, kale, broccoli rabe, okra, collard green, Chinese cabbage, rhubarb, turnip, carrots, rapini, green beans, Swiss chard, and watercress
- Other sources include oranges, figs, berries, sweet potato, butternut squash, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, seaweed, clams, rockfish, sardines, tortillas made with lime, organic edamame/tofu, black-eyed peas, navy beans, and almonds.
Other foods that can help in managing hyperparathyroidism include:
- Foods high in magnesium, such as bananas, avocado, cocoa, leafy greens
- Healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, fresh herbs spices, and grass-fed meats
Avoid foods that cause inflammation. Inflammatory foods to stay away from include:
- Processed grains
- Added sugar
- Synthetic ingredients
- Refined vegetable oils
2. Minimize Bone and Joint Pain
Staying active and stretching daily will keep the joints and bones from stiffing up and causing you pains. Regular exercise, especially the kind of exercise that includes carrying weight, is important for keeping your bone strong. Exercise can also help you in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease complications. There are various other ways to help manage your bone and joint pain. These ways include:
- Doing yoga or tai chi
- Applying peppermint essential oil to achy areas of the body
- Getting enough sleep
- Taking anti-inflammatory supplements, such as turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids
- Taking warm bath with Epsom salt
- Acupuncture or massage therapy
3. Avoid Calcium-raising Drugs
There are some medications that can raise calcium levels in the body; the same applies to some lithium and diuretics. If such drugs are in your medication, ask your doctor whether an alternative medication may be appropriate for you.
4. Don’t Smoke
Smoking may increase your risk of a number of serious health problems; it can also result in bone loss and potentially contribute immensely to cardiovascular disease. If you are a smoker, you can talk to your doctor about the best way to quit. You can join a smoking cessation group or use a nicotine patch. You can also try meditation, hypnosis, or other approaches that work.
It is also important that you avoid drinking a heavy amount of alcohol.
5. Combat Nausea and Loss of Appetite
If you are struggling with nausea, loss of appetite, or vomiting; these hyperparathyroidism natural remedies tips may help you to battle these conditions:
- Always stay hydrated. Drinking water herbal tea or coconut water will help you in staying hydrated, and helping you in lessening the risk of kidney stone. Eating fresh fruits and veggies also helps a lot.
- Get fresh air by taking a walk outdoors. Try to keep up with gentle exercise as long as possible; this will help in regulating your appetite.
- Every now and then, try consuming ginger tea and ginger roots. You can also make use of ginger essential oils or taking ginger capsules several times each day. To help curb nausea, take vitamin B6 one to three times each day.
- There are some essential oils that can help calm your stomach; they can also help in improving your appetite and mood. These oils include: lemon, peppermint, frankincense, lavender, chamomile, and ginger.
- Add some lime and lemon juice to ice water and sip it throughout the day.
- Get enough sleep because fatigue may cause you to feel sick. Sleep is a great remedy for hyperparathyroidism.
- Avoid food that can worsen digestive issues. Fatty/greasy foods, strong-smelling veggies, high-sodium packaged foods fall under this category. Other foods include animal protein, oil, spices or cheese. Consume smaller meals throughout the day instead of one to three big meals.
6. Prevent Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D helps in maintaining appropriate levels of calcium in the blood. It also helps the digestive system absorb calcium from food.
The standard recommendation for daily vitamin D intake amount is 600 international units (IUs) a day for people between the ages of 1 and 70, and 800 IUs a day for adults aged 71 and above.
Getting direct sun exposure is one of the best ways of preventing vitamin D deficiency. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, your body produces vitamin D. Alternatively, you can consume vitamin D from your diet. Try spending about 15 to 20 minutes under the sunlight each day without making use of sunscreen. Allow as much of your skin to be exposed to light as possible. In the winter when there is not enough sunlight, you can supplement with daily vitamin D.
Conclusion
Hyperparathyroidism natural remedies have been found to be highly effective. However, some conditions may demand that you treat them with conventional methods, such as surgery or the prescription of some medications. Therefore, first consulting your doctor is the step to take in knowing how you can go about finding a cure for the condition.
In no way must you begin the treatment of hyperparathyroidism without first finding out if you really have the condition. Treating the condition without actually having it may do more harm than good. So, do the necessary tests and take the advice of your doctor concerning the necessary treatment approach.

Hi, I’ve got hyperparathyroidism, am taking boron, turmeric, I read they’re suppose to suppress the parathyroid. Also am taking vitamin d 3 with K2 since they’re suppose to direct calcium from blood back into the bones. So my question is if I have so much calcium already in my blood, wouldn’t eating more calcium increase the problem? Thanks in advance
As far as I know about hyperparathyroidism, it is a very tricky thing. My mother has the same problem that you have and it’s tough to deal with; however I know that it’s recommended to still take calcium supplements because of your bones and bone loss. Depending on how high your calcium is, depends on how much you should be able to tolerate without jacking up your blood calcium.
Please talk to your primary care physician about what is right for you specifically so that you can control your blood calcium and keep your bones healthy and strong!
